Bjørnådal Arkitektstudio has received approval to rehabilitate Tollinspektør Flors gate 18 in Kristiansund. The building was designed in 1938 by architect Erling Vold and stands as a rare preserved example of functionalism in the city – with its clean lines, light, and honest use of materials.
Our task is to carry this architectural legacy forward while integrating sustainable and energy-efficient solutions. The project thus becomes a bridge between the architecture of the past and the climate-conscious building practices of the future.
Why does this matter?
The building sector accounts for about 40% of Europe’s energy use and 36% of CO₂ emissions.
20–25% of these emissions are “embodied” – tied up in materials and construction processes.
According to the EU and IEA, at least 20% of today’s building stock must be renovated to “zero-carbon-ready” by 2030 if we are to reach net zero by 2050.
By rehabilitating Tollinspektør Flors gate 18, we demonstrate how heritage, quality, and climate action can go hand in hand – a living example of poetic and regenerative architecture in practice.
